Trixie sat at the concession stand sipping a hay smoothie, with extra hay just how she liked it.
It had been six months since The Great and Powerful Trixie had her cart, her home, destroyed.
So she'd returned to the home she'd abandoned as a filly, the Canterlot circus. They'd promised she'd always have a home here and they'd kept that promise when she returned, no one asked questions. She was glad; she didn't want to answer them.
At first she had cried the nights away, she had lost her home and Canterlot brought back memories, some good some bad; Memories she had left behind when she left Canterlot, after...after her mother died.
"Hello there" said a kind voice; Trixie looked up from her smoothie to see a rather familiar looking face. What was Twilight Sparkle doing in Canterlot? No, she was older and the color was Different.
"Who are you?" Asked Trixie, glowering.
"I'm Twilight Twinkle, and you looked like you could use a friend."
"Maybe, maybe not. But aren't you a bit high class for some circus pony like me"
Twilight Twinkle smiled "You look pretty classy to me, though I do admit I'm sort of intrigued."
"Well, you're the only unicorn I've ever seen working in the circus that's for sure, and you look a lot like my husband. Like I said, I was intrigued."
"Oh yes, he never comes to the circus. I don't know why, he used to love it when we were younger." The mare passed Trixie a picture.
The colour drained from Trixie's face, this was a picture of a happy family. The kind of family Trixie never got, and there was Twilight Sparkle and...and her father. She was talking to the wife of the man who had broken her mothers heart and walked off, She was talking to the mother of the pony who had humiliated her. For just a brief flicker of a moment Trixie lost her cool, rage boiled in her heart and just for a moment her practised smug composure broke.
"Is something wrong deary?"
As politely as she could and through gritted teeth Trixie replied. "Oh no, Thank you very much. But I do think I know why your husband doesn't come to the circus any more, when you get home why don't you ask him about Patch. Anyways I have to be going, thanks for the talk."
Twilight Twinkle looked at the unicorn quizzically as she walked away, a sinking feeling in her gut as she realized just how similar her husband looked to this filly.
Twixie had arrived, she had packed her things and left right away. She didn't know why she was going where she was going, but she knew she had to go. She had to go see Twilight. She had to see...her sister. Trixie knocked on the door.
Twilight Sparkle turned off the bathwater, it had been a long day with her crazy friends dragging her around town. But it was all worth it for this, a nice warm bath, some booze and a good book. Her reverie was interrupted by a loud banging on her door, who would be knocking at this hour in the rain even.
As Twilight opened the door her jaw dropped there was Trixie standing in the rain covered in sticks and mud. As Trixie saw her she drew something from her cloak and held it to her face telekinetically, it was a picture of her family "We need to talk."
Twilight said the first thing that came to her mind "You need a bath."
Upstairs Twilight waited outside her bath room as Trixie cleaned up. She continued to stare at the picture of her family from before she went to the royal academy, someone had put a nice big circle around her fathers cutie mark with the words 'and what do you think this means?'.
The Great and Powerful Trixie came out of the shower, Twilight thought she looked much better. "Alright Trixie, what do we need to talk about?"
Trixie gave her a smug grin "Well after my cart was destroyed, you remember my cart don't you?" Twilight just nodded "Well after that little thing with the Ursa I didn't have any money to get a new cart, so I went back home to the Canterlot."
"You're from Canterlot?" Twilight gulped
"Indeed I am, and while I was there I met this nice lady who showed me this picture and when I saw it I just knew that we had so much to talk about, don't you agree....sister?"
The bombshell had been dropped, there it was out in the open and the picture was damning proof. Twilight's father had cheated on her mother, Twilight's father had a child with the women who stole his affections from her mother, Twilight's father....had left those two, had abandoned them, and that child was the Great and Powerful Trixie. Twilight didn't know what to think.
Trixie led her sister to the booze cabinet and opened it up "I'm gonna need a lot of alcohol for this, you want some."
Trixie looked a bit quizzically at Twilight.
"Don't worry about it, It's Friday and Friday is drink myself into a coma day. So I'll restock tomorrow."
"Ummmm, ok. Why?"
"Because I have interesting Fridays."
Trixie levitated out a bottle of nice cheap wine.
"That's it? Come on that stuff is crap! you're my sister, take something better."
Trixie shook her head and took her wine, Twilight for her part got a bottle of scotch.
"There looks to be some pretty expensive stuff in there."
"Well you know how it is, most my expenses are paid for by the royal magic academy, and I still get an allowance from my parents so I figure why not spend it on some good booze?"
"No, I don't know how it is. I grew up in the circus."
"You were in the circus? Did you know Old Monte?"
"Yeah, he taught me everything I know about stage magic."
"Oh wow, I used to love going to his shows. I loved magic tricks as a kid."
"I bet." Trixie smiled, she always loved it when people enjoyed the show.
"But I don't get it, you're a unicorn how did end up growing up in the circus."
"My mother wasn't a unicorn."
A lump formed in Twilight's throat "Then, then I guess you don't know what it was like for me growing up."
"Well my life wasn't exactly all sugar cubes and daffodils either. When I got my cutie mark I accidentally turned my parents into flora. They never spoke to me again."
Trixie just glowered at her "And yet the money never stopped coming did it?"
"Well no but..."
"And you got taken in by the princess herself."
"You want to hear how I got MY cutie mark?"
Trixie tried again and she failed again. She was a unicorn, unicorns had magic, she could just imagine how much better the circus would be if the magic show had REAL magic instead of just tricks. Tricks she sighed, that's all she could do, that's all Trixie could ever do, tricks. She wasn't a unicorn; she was just an earth pony with a horn. 'Great and Powerful' Trixie, what a load of crock.
Patch regarded her frustrated daughter fondly "Come on now Trixie it's OK, even if you can't do anything but light up your horn you'll still be a great stage magician. You're very good for your age."
"Then why don't I have a cutie mark yet?" Trixie retorted.
"You'll get it soon enough dear, you know what your destiny is, you just haven't put all the pieces together yet."
Trixie thought, what piece was missing other than real magic? She wished desperately that her father would come back for her, whisk her away to the royal magic academy. She could learn some real magic from them, then return and make the circus a hit. She looked down, no there would be no father coming, no training, she was on her own. Trixie had to do this alone.
Trixie tried one last time; one last vain attempt to be a real unicorn. There in that moment she felt it, at first a trickle, but then the wand began to move, Trixie's eyes shone with an inner light. "Mum! Mum! look, it's working!" Trixie's horn glowed brighter than it ever had, and as her excitement grew so did the feeling she felt. What began as a trickle was soon a roaring torrent as more than just the wand began to move, books, candles, anything that wasn't nailed down. Including her mother.
"Trixie! Trixie! you have to stop, this is getting out of hand!"
But Trixie couldn't hear her, Trixie couldn't see her, Trixie was off in the world of her magic, her eyes glowed with power and her only thought was the wonderful feeling of pure magic that flowed through her, flowed from her.
"Trixie..." smack! "Please..." wham! "You have to..." thud! "Stop!" Patch crawled to her daughter as she and the rest of the room were flung around like rag dolls. She reached her daughter and did the only thing she could, hug her.
Trixie felt her mothers touch, smelt her smell, and with a snap she returned to reality. A snap that sent her mother flying. Trixie looked at her mother battered and bruised, one leg sprawled unnaturally "Mummy?"
"You're safe Trixie, that's good." Patch said as she closed her eyes.
"Mummy? Mummy? MUMMMMYYYY"
Twilight listened to Trixie's story "So what happened to your mother did she?" she asked as she downed another shot of vodka
"She died." Trixie announced.
Trixie sniffled next to her mother in the hospital bed, another unicorn walked past, another disapproving glance.
"Come on now dear, don't let them get to you. I love you, the circus loves you." Patch looked lovingly at her daughter.
"Mummy? You're Awake?" Her mum had been awake less and less as the days passed from the incident "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."
"Shhhh, it's not your fault."
"Yes it is."
"No it's not, you couldn't control it." Her mother laid a hoof on her. "Now don't you cry, no one wants to see a stage pony cry OK?" Trixie nodded as she dried her eyes. "Chin up, and don't let them get to you, your better than them; you're the Great And Powerful Trixie, aren't you?"
Trixie nodded as her mother closed her eyes again, this time forever. Trixie promised she wouldn't cry, she promised she would be the Great and Powerful Trixie.
"There, there Trixie. Drown your sorrows in some booze. It's what I do."
"I'm not you."
"No, you're not. You aren't half as good."
Trixie glared as she downed a margharita.
"You going Trix?" The young colt looked at her.
"Yeah. I gotta make my own way in the world."
"You don't Trix, you can stay here; no one blames you...blames you for what happened."
"No one except me you mean."
As she spoke Old Monte walked behind her, the stallion she should have saw as her father earlier instead of pining for a father that was no such thing. "I'm worried about you Trix, you're a better magician than me now but you don't know all my tricks."
"I'll come back, I'll see you again. But I can't stay here. Too many memories." She had lied, she never saw the Old Monte again. He died while she was on the road.
"Be a good girl, don't get in trouble and remember you'll always have a home here."
"I know... Dad." She hugged Old Monte, and held back the tears because The Great and Powerful Trixie didn't cry, she was better than that.
"I'm so proud of you Trixie."
"Compared to mine." Trixie slurred through her whiskey. "Your life is nothing but sugar cubes and daffodils. Everything handed to you in life on a silver platter."
"That's because my mother isn't an Earth Pony Whore!"
There was silence, for a moment, Twilight broke out of her drunken stupour to realize the enormity of what she had said. Then the first book slammed against her head.
WHAM! Another book slammed into Twilight's side. She wasn't really sure how it had gotten here, words had been said, tempers had flared and here she was battered and bruised as she and her new found sister went at each other with whatever was handy, and as they were in a library that meant books. Twilight screamed with rage as she slammed her own book on her half sisters head.
The whole room began to hum, they were both threw themselves into the fight with everything they had. Horns crackled and eyes began to glow as suddenly a rainbow blur streaked through the room just in time towards Trixie.
"I got your back Twi, I won't let her hurt you!" Dash forced Trixie to the ground and covered her horn, recalling how Twilight once said a unicorn couldn't use magic with their horn covered. A very large encyclopedia streaked towards her and slammed her against the wall. "What the? But unicorn, horn, how?"
Applejack looked on. She just wasn't as fast as her friend nor was she as prone to rushing in. "That wasn Trixie's magic, that was..."
"Get, your, hooves, off, my, sister." Twilight glared at her friend.
"Sister?!" The pairs mouths fell open, so many questions raced through their minds.
"So lemme get this straight sugar cube, you an Trixie are kin."
Twilight said nothing.
"So why y'all fightin? Kin shouldn' fight."
"She called my mother an earth pony whore."
"But you're sisters so you have the same mother right?"
Applejack shook her head at the spirit of loyalty. "They be half sisters I'm betting."
The two nodded
"It means their pa was two timing their ma's."
The spirit of loyaltie's mind reeled at the thought.
"Now you two, calm down. Dash go fetch some cold water, they're drunk and angry."
Dash zipped outside to fetch a pail of water, returning it rapidly to the house. "What are you going to do...?" Applejack had already thrown a pail of freezing water on the two.
"Applejack was that necessary?" Said the now not so drunk and very cold and very wet Twilight.
"Shoot, I think another might be in order. Now what happened here? tell me everything."
The two sisters looked at each other, Twilight spoke. "Trixie only found out the truth recently, she came to tell me, we had some drinks and talked about our childhoods. The conversation got heated when it was clear how different our childhoods were."
"Her mum was an earth pony right?" Trixie nodded, Applejack knew then what Twilight meant by different.
"And I said something very inappropriate about her mother, and well what happened next you saw."
"So you two feelin' better?" Twilight nodded. "And you?" Trixie nodded hesitantly. "Then good, you two get to bed. It's late. Talk in the morning, and don't throw no more books ya hear?"
Applejack and Rainbow Dash walked out and looked at each other "You actually goin?"
"No, I don't trust her."
Applejack and Dash laid down in the mud there head against the door to hear what they could
"Rarity and Fluttershy are going down to the spa tomorrow right?"
"Yeah, why you ask?"
"Think I'll join them. you wanna come?" Dash said looking at her muddy body
"Nah, you know I don't like that frou-frou nonsense sugar cube."
"Hey your loss."
One Year Later
Twilight Sparkle walked up the balcony, so much had happened in the last two years and it all came down to this. She'd made some great friends, She'd reunited with her mother thanks to a long chat about her fathers affair, and she had a sister who gave her something she never thought she needed, an equal.
"In this corner, bringing down the thunder, is the earth pony magician, the Moonlight Illusionist, the Canterlot circus' own GREAT and POWERFUL TRIXIE." Spike yelled through the microphone, she heard cheering and stampeding as her sister took the stage.
She giggled to herself, She could see why Dash loved this kind of stuff. Finally she would see if badgering Celestia to allow Luna to take on Trixie would pay off, finally she would see what Trixie could do with some real training.
"And in this corner the pride and joy of the royal magical academy, Celestia's favored pupil, Wielder of the element of magic itself, the one and only TWILIGHT SPARKLE!" She ascended to the stage.
